Mariana Chenillo is a Mexican director and screenwriter who won fame with her first feature film, Nora's Wil.  This dark comedy based on a Jewish Mexican family enthralled critics and in 2010 received the Ariel Award, the maximum recognition given by the film industry in Mexico. She became the first woman director to win this recognition.

 

     Although Mariana Chenillo has confessed to feeling more comfortable making feature films, she was invited to participate in the project Revolution (2010), a series of  ten short films about the Mexican Revolution. Chenillo believes that things have not changed much after the Revolution; La tienda de raya, the piece she created for this project, narrates a situation of injustice based on a real story: "Se trataba sobre un hombre en Tamaulipas que decidió demandar a la cadena de supermercados en la que trabajaba porque ésta le pagaba con vales de despensa que sólo podía cambiar allí mismo, una especie de tienda de raya moderna” (Informador.mx).

 

     Her most recent work maintains her humorous touch in a romantic comedy based on Julieta Arévalo's short story, "Paraíso." This time Chenillo works with Canana, the production company formed by Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna y Pablo Cruz. Paradise narrates the story of a young obese couple who tries to lose weight with different results. When asked about this film, Chenillo explains:

 

     “A veces siento que las mujeres cargamos con cierta inercia. Sobre todo en la clase media mexicana, si bien ya vamos a la universidad y todo eso, veo muchísimas mujeres cuya felicidad pasa por tener felices a sus maridos y a sus hijos. Y en la vida de esas mujeres nunca hay una pausa para preguntarse qué quieren ellas. Me interesaba hablar de ese proceso cuando algo se rompe y luego ya no encaja y uno tiene que decidir qué va a hacer con su vida” (El Sur 9/12/2013).
